Do air purifiers work for smoke?

January 21, 2019

Removing cigarette, cigar, marijuana, and vaping odors and lingering smells from your home.

Smoke can infiltrate every nook and cranny of a house or vehicle and leaves behind an unpleasant smell that can linger on long after the source of the smoke is gone.

Old-fashioned techniques to remove the smell

  • Boil some vinegar, or use it to wash affected items.
  • Sprinkle baking soda on affected items.
  • Lay out bowls of charcoal.
  • Set out bowls of coffee grounds.
  • Soak cotton balls with vanilla extract.
  • Cut apples in half, and lay the halves around your house or car.
  • Scrub walls and floors with a mixture of ammonia and water.

Modern Technology

  • Use an air purifier with a carbon filter.

Wash Your Walls

Smoke leaves its residue and odor on everything it comes in contact with. If you’re moving into a new home, and the previous owners smoked inside, the walls can retain the smell of smoke for a long time.

Do not burn scented candles or use perfumed aerosols because they only mask the odor (and actually create an additional indoor air pollution problem – but more on that in another article!).
Ventilation can help to remove some of the smell, but it actually only dilutes the odor and does not remove the smell permanently.

Does a Carbon Filter Remove Marijuana Smell?

Look, we know that marijuana is being legalized in areas world-wide. But that doesn’t mean that your neighbors necessarily agree with the legalization, or want to deal with the smell. The unique smell can be very persistent, obvious, and hard to get rid of, but an air purifier with a carbon filter can help with that.

Let’s talk about secondhand smoke.

How Can I Handle Secondhand Smoke?

“Secondhand smoke exposure in multi-unit dwellings such as apartments and condominiums is unfortunately both a common problem and also dangerous for you and your family. Exposure to secondhand smoke can lead to serious health problems including lung cancer, heart disease and stroke, and can make asthma worse in adults and children. It is especially dangerous for children as it can result in permanent damage to growing lungs, and cause respiratory illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia, ear infections and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)”.1

Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to lung health. Short of quitting, there are steps that you can take to protect those around you from secondhand smoke. By using the Defender Air Purifier for smoke, your home (and your family & neighbors!) will thank you.
